The idea for such a festival had its origins in the event "Wir sind mehr". This event in turn was organized as a direct response to the racist and right-wing extremist riots in the city center of Chemnitz in August 2018. This protest event managed to mobilize 65,000 people with pop-musical statements for tolerance and against right-wing violence and to attract national and international attention.
With "Wir sind mehr" it was possible to react quickly and decisively to the daily political events and to set an example. Now, with KOSMOS CHEMNITZ, the aim is to perpetuate the debate about democratic values so that the open society has a future.
Through the virtual expansion of the festival, goals in the range and internationality of KOSMOS CHEMNITZ on the way to CHEMNITZ 2025 can also be achieved more quickly in the coming years. Therefore, the virtual platform will also be considered in the future next to a presence festival as a fixed component. In 2021, Kulturhaus Arthur was once again part of Kosmos Chemnitz with the three-part summer edition of the showtalk "Titten, Thesen, Temperamente".
